This course is designed to emphasize three areas of study: writing, literature, and author’s craft. In the course of the school year, students will be exposed to works that broaden their perspectives and make them think about how they interact with others. Students will begin the year with To Kill a Mockingbird, during which they will learn to analyze choices the author makes and how those choices impact readers. They will then work through a textbook unit and Fahrenheit 451, during which students will learn to build respectful, eloquent arguments. Second semester, the students will read and analyze Twelfth Night and then will complete a choice novel project with a focus on immigration. Students will develop an understanding of diverse literary traditions from around the world while learning to analyze cultures and author’s craft.
